“Janine & The Mixtape ‘Dark Mind’ EP review”
Due to some techincal issues I wasn't able to embed the soundcloud, although you can stream it from her site.
I’m just going to jump right into it on this one, you can find a briefing on Janine and the Dark Minds EP here.
1) Let It Run – 4:04
The song conveys waves of compassion with a beat that almost tickles your
eardrums while her voice dances around them. It can be hard trying to catch the
voice; it disappears allowing the beat to lull you, only to be awoken when her
voice returns.
2) Dark Mind – 4:16
The trap style beat wakes you from the lull and the voice is
no longer dancing, but confronting. It’s acceptance of a current state of mind,
coming to terms with experiences. The drums allow for great reinforcement,
especially with the heavy drops adding strength to the message of discovery of
self-confidence.
3) Hold Me – 3:51
Almost as if realizing that her previous message might have
been too strong, she brings a more vulnerable tone out for this track. Opening
up her heart that even though she has accepted things for what they are, it
doesn’t make the pain any easier.
4) Little Bit – 3:54
The vocals play second fiddle to the beat up until the end, it can be a
bit of a trek, but the buildup is worth it. Getting out of a slump, she’s
pushing away the comfort called for in the previous song; after all we all have
our moments right?
5) Bullets – 3:37
Without a doubt the strongest song on the EP, the culmination
of a multitude of bad experiences that created the woman stronger than ever.
The drops hit hard, lending so much energy to her voice, could make your hair
stand on end.
An overall
strong project that is easy to listen to, an emotional rollercoaster. There’s
still room to grow as an artist for Janine, but for her debut EP it’s obvious
that there is extreme potential there. Definitely looking forward to see how
she grows with her craft in the future.
